Ice Volcano {Activity for Kids}

Do you need a quick and easy to put together activity for the kids that will keep them busy for a long time?  That was exactly what I needed when Rosie and Jewel were sick the other day, and this ice volcano did the trick just right!

This activity took me a minute to put together and kept Rosie and Jewel happy and playing for a very long time.

Method
Add 1-2 cups of baking soda to your pie pan and then fill it with very warm water.  Stir the mixture until the baking soda dissolves.  Then place the pie pan in the fridge for 6-8 hours.  The only other thing you need to do is fill containers (or squirt bottles) with vinegar and add a few drops of food coloring.  Pop the ice volcano from the pie pan just before play and kids will have a BLAST!

We used droppers, but you could also use squirt bottles.  Using the droppers made the vinegar last a lot longer and also added a bit of fine motor practice.  Rosie and Jewel had tons of fun dropping the colorful vinegar onto the ice volcano to make it ERUPT!

Changing the temperature of this loved experiment changed the reaction.  The eruptions started out slow but lasted longer.  The volcano also smoked during play when lots of vinegar was added, which was really cool!

 The more vinegar Rosie & Jewel added the more the volcano bubbled and FIZZED

So colorful & FUN!

Touching the icy volcano and fizzing eruptions was also lots of fun; Rosie even drew a few pictures in the ice.
