Floam is so fun & really easy to make! We made our rainbow floam very similar to how we made our glow in the dark floam, only this time we used neon paint & added scent.
Scented Floam Materials
- White school glue
- Neon paint
- Polystyrene beads (bean bag filler)
Optional: essential oil to add scent
Method
- In a bowl combine two bottles of white school glue with 1& 1/2 cups of polystyrene beads and mix well. Add a few drops of essential oil to the mixture if scent is desired.
- Divide the glue and bead mixture into containers, using one container for each color of floam you wish to make. Then add a squirt of neon paint to each container.
- Mix the paint into the glue mixture, and then slowly add liquid starch to each container until the desired consistency is reached.
- Be sure to add the starch slowly & mix well before adding more! You will need very little. See the bottom of the post for helpful tips.
- That's it! After a bit of mixing you will have beautifully vibrant glowing floam!

My girls loved squishing, stretching, building, and creating with their floam. I gave them play dough tools and toy figures, and they played for hours!
Adding essential oil made the floam smell amazing! Essential oil comes in a variety of scents; for this activity we used sweet orange essential oil.
Tips & Troubleshooting: Store your floam in an air tight container, and it will keep for several months. Polystrene beads can be found at most craft stores or online here. Liquid starch can be found at Super Walmart stores or online here. Be sure to add the liquid starch to this recipe slowly, as a little goes a long way. Each time we make floam the amount of starch needed varies slightly, but to give you an idea the recipe is roughly two parts glue & 1 part starch. If you accidentally add too much starch you can remedy that by adding more glue.
Is your floam too sticky? Add more starch How do you know you have the consistency right? The floam will be squishy and moldable but not sticky or too rubbery. If the floam is breaking apart too easily that means you added too much starch & need more glue.
