Homemade Aqua Sand Recipe

Did you know that you can make almost any art and play material that is sold in stores?  It amazes me how many things can be made at home, and I love creating new play materials and recipes for fun.  So, the other day when Rosie and Jewel saw aqua sand in the store I just knew that we had to try and make it.

Aqua sand is so incredibly cool!  The sand is waterproof and reacts to liquid in such a unique way, allowing you to build amazing underwater castles and sculptures.  It is too fun not to try, and you won't believe how easy this stuff is to make!

Method
Begin by laying the desired amount of sand out in piles on wax paper.  Then spray the sand piles with the fabric protector of your choice.

We used Scotch Guard purchased from Target for a couple of dollars, but any brand should work.  Mix the fabric protector into the sand piles, adding more protector until all the sand is fully saturated.

You will want to do this in a well ventilated area.  Then allow the sand to dry.  This does not take long (about an hour).  Once the sand is dry pour it into containers and set the kids up with a container of water so that they can create underwater castles & sea sculptures

Both Rosie and Jewel had tons of fun building and creating with their aqua sand, and the most amazing part is that the sand comes out of the water completely dry!  Another great thing is that the aqua sand can be used again & again!  Pretty cool stuff!

Storage & Tips:  You can store your homemade aqua sand in containers for future play.  All you have to do is scoop the sand from the water and lay it out so that the water surrounding the sand dries.  The sand itself will already be dry.  You can get colored sand at most crafts stores for a few dollars or online here.  You can find regular sand at Home Depot for under $3, or you can get it online here.  If you don't feel like going through the hassle of making aqua sand you can buy it online here

Note:  If your sand does not work properly after a few play times you can re-spray it with fabric protector to restore it.  Ours worked fine for about 5 play times, and then we had to restore the sand by spraying it again.

More Fun Ways to Play With Sand

STICKY SAND: Mold it, build it, & CONTAIN IT! This sand acts wet, but it isn't! It sticks together well, but it does not stick to skin. My kids love this stuff, and I love the less-messy alternative to traditional play sand!
