- 2 cups of baking soda
- 1 cup of corn starch
- 1 & 1/2 cups of cold water
- Food coloring or liquid watercolors in the desired colors
- Rose oil, chocolate extract or essential oil, vanilla extract, or any other preferred scent
Instructions
I wanted to make chocolate clay, rose clay, and conversation heart clay. If you have other scents in mind you can use those to make all different clay varieties.
- Begin by combining the baking soda, corn starch, and water in a pot on the stove.
- Cook over medium-high heat for roughly ten minutes, stirring almost constantly. The ingredients will quickly begin to bubble and the clay will begin to form.
- Continue to stir until you have the consistency of mashed potatoes. You can see photos of the cooking process here.
- Quickly transfer the clay from the pot to a heat safe bowl and cover with a damp cloth until cool enough to knead.
- Once possible knead the clay for several minutes.
- Divide the base clay into bowls if you wish to make more than one type
- Add a few drops of coloring and scent to each bowl and mix well. Add more until the desired effect is achieved. If using food coloring you will need quite a bit to get a really rich color. We find that liquid watercolors works best
Rosie and Jewel had lots of fun playing with the love doughs the first few days we made them. After a bit of play we set out to make heart necklaces
Rosie and Jewel used small sized heart cookie cutters to make the pendants, and then we embellished them with glitter, beads, and foam stickers before leaving them to dry. You can find small heart cookie cutters at Walmart, Michaels, or online here.
Don't forget to poke a hole in the pendants before leaving them to dry. In about 24-48 gours the pendants will be ready to be threaded into necklaces
Rosie is especially proud of her homemade heart necklaces and can't wait to give them out to her friends.
