Homemade washable Liquid Watercolors
We have shared a simple way to make your own washable watercolors in the past, but as soon as I saw this new way to make watercolors from Preschool Inspirations I knew we had to try it! The process of making your own paint is fun, and these watercolors cost mere pennies to make.
Washable Liquid Watercolors Materials (affiliate links provided)
- Washable watercolor pack(s)
- Water
- Bowls or containers
Instructions
- Pop each watercolor cake from the pack, and place it in very hot water
- How many watercolor cakes you need will depend on how much liquid watercolors you want to make and how vibrant you want them to be. I wanted ours to be REALLY vibrant, so I used two cakes for each color.
- Let the cakes sit in the water for several minutes and then stir well. Once all of the watercolor cake is dissolved and mixed into the water you will be left with beautiful liquid watercolors.
I used a funnel to pour ours into jars. We now have homemade watercolors to use any time we need them for activities! Aren't they colorful and vibrant?

A Few Tips: While these watercolors are vibrant they are not quite as vibrant as the store bought variety. For coloring play recipes and sensory materials you may still want to use store bought watercolors for really vibrant coloring. The ones we use can be found here. I plan to use the homemade watercolors for art and science activities, and to save our other watercolors for coloring sensory materials and play recipes.
