Magic Snow Paint

The other day Rosie and Jewel were growing bored of playing in the snow, but I wanted them to get a bit more exercise and outdoor time.  So, I whipped up a batch of easy to make MAGIC snow paint and sent the girls on a hunt for magic snow.

Making the snow paint was easy, and Rosie and Jewel had lots of fun hunting for magic snow.

Magic Snow Paint Recipe
  • Vinegar
  • Food Coloring
  • Squirt Bottles or spray bottles
  • Baking soda
  • Optional- use Kool-aid packets in place of food coloring to give the vinegar a delightful scent.
Fill the squirt bottles with vinegar and add a few drops of food coloring.  Place the lids on the squirt bottles and then shake them up.  You can also use Kool-Aid in place of the food coloring to give the vinegar a delightful scent.  Once the magic paint is mixed up all you need is baking soda.  I sprinkled the baking soda on top of the snow in scattered places so that Rosie and Jewel could hunt for magic snow.

Hunting for magic snow

Rosie and Jewel love baking soda and vinegar eruptions, and this was such a fun way to explore their favorite bit of magical Science.

Do you have snow where you are?
Why not send the kids on a hunt for magic snow?

A Few Tips:  The magical snow eruptions work best on packed snow that has been outside for a day or two.  We tried this activity on fresh powder and on packed snow, and the results were much better on the packed snow.  We have also played using squirt bottles and spray bottles.  The spray bottles gave us larger, more visible eruptions.  I recommend having lots of baking soda and vinegar on hand.  Rosie and Jewel asked me to refill their spray bottles several times.  We buy our baking soda and vinegar in bulk at Walmart for very cheap.
