Treasure Chalk
What could be more fun than sidewalk chalk with treasures hidden inside? As kids draw and create art the chalk gets smaller, and the treasures are discovered. My girls were so enthralled by this simple addition to their chalk play. Discovering the treasures was such a fun surprise!
Materials
- Baking Soda
- Water
- Food Coloring
- Treasures
- A shaped baking mold, muffin tin, or ice tray
Method:
Add the desired amount of baking soda to a bowl. One standard box will produce roughly 3-6 pieces of chalk depending on how big you make them. I used two boxes of baking soda to make six very large pieces of treasure chalk.
Slowly add water to the bowl in small amounts and mix. Continue to add more water until the desired consistency is reached. You want the mixture to be damp and mold-able but not too wet. I used just under one cup (roughly 3/4 cup), and it gave me the perfect consistency
Once you have the mixture right divide it into bowls so that you can make a variety of chalk colors. Add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl and mix well. This part may tinge hands, so you may want to use a spoon or wear gloves. Once the coloring is mixed in it is time to form the chalk pieces. For this you can use a baking mold, muffin tin, ice tray, or even just your hands. This time I used a muffin tin. Fill the tray compartments half way with the baking soda mixture, add whatever treasures you want, and then fill the compartments the rest of the way with the baking soda, packing tightly

Allow 24-48 hours for drying. Once dry you will have colorful treasure chalk.
The chalk is vibrant and works really well on the pavement
And after a bit of creating the treasures start to be revealed.....
Rosie and Jewel had lots of fun making street art, and they were so excited when they discovered there were treasures tucked inside the chalk
The treasure chalk was so easy to make and so frugal that we will definitely be making it again!
