We made these play dough varieties using the same base recipe that we used to make snow dough.  I am telling you this really is one dough recipe that you must try!  It is so easy to make and amazingly soft.

Christmas Play Dough (Affiliate links provided)
  • Corn Starch
  • Lotion (We buy ours at the dollar store)
  • Liquid watercolors or food coloring
  • Holiday scents- we used vanilla extract, cinnamon spice, peppermint extract, and a homemade gingerbread spice mixture
  • Optional addition- glitter
Add the desired amount of corn starch to a bowl.  I used two 16 oz boxes of corn starch, and it produced a lot of dough.  Slowly mix lotion into the starch until the desired dough consistency is reached.  You can add more or less lotion to give you different dough consistencies.  I used a full 20 oz bottle of lotion and it gave me an amazingly soft and glorious play dough

Once the dough is mixed divide it into equal parts.  We divided our dough into four bowls so that we could make four play dough varieties.  In one bowl I added yellow watercolors and a few drops of vanilla extract to give us sugar cookie play dough

In another bowl I mixed green watercolors and peppermint extract to make peppermint play dough.  Red watercolors and a few sprinkles of cinnamon spice gave us cinnamon play dough.  To make the gingerbread play dough I used brown watercolors along with cinnamon spice, nutmeg, and clove.  To get the perfect gingerbread aroma you will want to use more cinnamon than the other spices

I have been pulling one out at a time and setting up different invitations to create.  This has been keeping the girls engaged longer.  Adding buttons to the gingerbread play dough and setting up a cookie decorating activity with the sugar cookie dough are two examples of ways to extend the play.

A Few Tips- you can use food coloring to color the dough but liquid watercolors will produce a much richer color.  If using food coloring you will want to use a lot to get vibrant dough varieties.  The watercolors are also washable and won't stain the skin during the mixing process.  If you do use food coloring it will not stain the skin once it is mixed into the dough.  Don't forget to store the play dough in a zip seal bag or air tight container between play times.
