Candy Cane Paint Recipes

The candy cane paint recipe we shared last Christmas was such a hit that we have created quite a few more fun candy cane paints.  Here are 4 ways to make candy cane paint this holiday.

Swirled Candy Cane Paint

• Shaving cream
• Red food coloring
• Peppermint extract
• A bowl

Add the desired amount of shaving cream to a bowl.  Place a few drops of red food coloring and peppermint extract on top and gently swirl to create a candy cane effect.  This is the original candy cane paint recipe that we shared.  It is the easiest to make and lots of fun for kids.

This paint is so easy to make, and there are so many fun ways to use it!  Make marbled candy cane garland, paint at bath time, use it for simple sensory play, and more!

Candy Cane Puffy Paint

• Shaving cream
• White school glue
• Red food coloring
• Peppermint extract
• Two bowls

This is just a different version of the above paint.  Instead of swirling the colors we left them separated and added glue to create NEW fun ways to play and explore.  Add equal parts of shaving cream and glue to both bowls.  This is a rough estimate; we always free pour.  In one bowl add peppermint extract and a few drops of red food coloring to the surface of the shaving cream.  In the other bowl just add peppermint extract and mix

This paint is great for making puffy candy cane art.  The paint dries puffy and raised, making the art fun for kids to touch!

Candy Cane Squirty Paint

• 1/2 cup of salt
• 1/2 cup of flour
• 1/2 cup of water
• 3-5 drops of peppermint extract
• Red food coloring
• Two squirt bottles
• A bowl

Mix the above ingredients excluding the food coloring.  I find it easiest to mix the ingredients in a bowl and then transfer the paints to squeeze bottles once mixed.  Once the paint is split into squeeze bottles add a few drops of red food coloring to one bottle and mix well.  Squirty paint is so fun for kids.  They love squeezing the paints to make fun designs on paper.

Liquid Candy Cane Paint

• Corn starch
• Water
• Red food coloring
• Peppermint extract
• Two containers

Add the desired amount of corn starch along with a few drops of peppermint extract to each container.  In one container mix in a drop or two of red food coloring.  Slowly add water to each container until the desired paint consistency is reached.  You can add more or less water to create different art experiences.  My girls had lots of fun exploring textures by starting with a thick paint and slowly adding water as they painted.
